Code of Practice for the JobShop and Employers

The JobShop is an employment service we offer our students. We hold a database of students who are looking for part time and seasonal work. We email vacancy information to registered students. Your vacancy will also be advertised in the Students' Union foyer on the JobShop board and we will place the vacancy details in the JobShop section of the student newspaper - Scan - adverts are placed in the next available issue.

We do not make any charge for this service as it is our aim to provide part time job opportunities for students who wish to work whilst attending Lancaster University.

The placement of an advert with the JobShop shall be deemed acceptance of and agreement to this code of practice.

Employers must be clear on the nature of the work offered. They should also specify the necessary skills, wages and other terms of employment such as hours to be worked and when employment will end. Rates of pay, method of payments and any other relevant information should be passed on to the student employee not later than the first day of employment.

The employer should be aware of student’s study obligations and should bear these in mind when negotiating hours of work with students.

It is the employers’ responsibility to inform students of the results of applications as soon as possible. It is the employers’ responsibility to satisfy itself of a students’ suitability for a post and to take up any references that may be required.

It is the duty of the employer to meet all statutory legal requirements with regard to students employed via the JobShop. In particular the employer is reminded of the following requirements:

If an employer finds that a student recruited through the JobShop does not fulfil reasonable expectations, the service will re-advertise the vacancy and attempt to put forward a suitable replacement if requested to do so.

The JobShop reserves the right not to advertise vacancies it considers unsuitable for students.

The JobShop reserves the right to refuse to advertise further vacancies from any company that breaches this code.

The JobShop shall bear no liability for loss, damage or delay howsoever arising in the performance of these services and in particular caused by circumstances beyond its control (of whatsoever kind).
