What is the JobShop?

The JobShop is a service that advertises part time vacancies in the Lancaster and Morecambe area and some campus opportunities. You can register for the service on-line or call into the Students' Union building and look at the JobShop vacancy display boards situated in the foyer. We also advertise full time vacancies that are available during the vacations. The service operates all year round and is available to you whilst you are a Lancaster student.

Where is the JobShop situated?

The JobShop operates from the Information Desk in the Students Union, Slaidburn House, underneath Spar, on campus. There are vacancy boards located in the foyer and also on the South Spine (ouside the Venue).

Why should I register for the service?

If you register for the JobShop service you will receive the latest job vacancy alerts by email. This gives you a chance to apply immediately before the vacancy goes on general display.

What types of job are advertised?

Most of the vacancies are in the local area and are within travelling distance of campus. We advertise all sorts of work but here are a few examples - working in bars, clubs and restaurants, to clerical work, telesales and call centre work, retail, cleaning and care work.

Will the JobShop find me a job?

We cannot provide a job for you individually. We find vacancies with various local employers and then send email alerts to students who have registered for that type of work. The advert is then displayed on the JobShop noticeboards and advertised in Scan, the Students Union newspaper.

How does the JobShop get in touch with me?

We send email alerts out with new vacancy details to all students who have expressed an interest in that type of work. Sometimes, if a vacancy needs filling very quickly, we contact you for your availability by phone.

How many hours can I work whilst I am studying?

The JobShop recommends that students work no more than 15 hours per week whilst studying. During vacation time you can be increase the hours worked to full time.

Do students have to pay National Insurance and Income tax?

Everyone who earns above a certain amount pays contributions. LUSU Advice has detailed information about National Insurance and Income tax on their website.

Im an International Student am I allowed to work whilst I am here?

Most International students are permitted to work for a maximum of 20 hours per week during term time. It does depend on the type of stamp you have in your passport. Check the International students page for detailed information about working in the UK, National Insurance and Income tax.

What is the National Minimum Wage (NMW)?

For workers aged 22 and over: £5.52 per hour. Development* rate for workers aged 18 21 years inclusive: £4.60 per hour. *The development rate can also apply to workers aged 22 and above during their first 6 months in a new job with a new employer and who are receiving accredited training.

I have a part time job but I think my employer is being unfair, what can I do?

If you are in part time employment you have basic employment rights and the LUSU Advice centre can give you help and advice.

Application forms and how to fill them in!

The JobShop hold Application form workshops during the Academic Year. These events are advertised in advance and they usually take place during a lunch time. You will find that when you complete an application for part time work you do not have to go into as much detail as you would when applying for a permanent full time position.
