Helpful hints when looking for part time work!

Whilst you are studying at University you may want to take a part time job. There are various ways you can look for work but primarily you can register for the JobsShop service on-line at www.lusu.co.uk/jobshop. Unfortunately the JobShop does not handle every part time job vacancy in the Lancaster area or on campus so we do have some other suggestions you might like to try!

There is a JobCentre located in Lancaster at Mitre House on Church Street or visit www.jobcentreplus.co.uk Here you can search for local vacancies by submitting your requirements and using your Lancaster postcode.

The local newspaper is the Lancaster Guardian, comes out weekly on a Thursday evening and has a part time vacancies section in it. You will also find that many of the local shops, pubs etc in the town centre often advertise for staff by putting notices in their windows so keep your eyes open when you are in town shopping!!

Applying for the job

Most part time jobs will expect you to either call in and collect an application form or telephone them for further details.

If you have to call in person to an employer to collect an application form remember to be confident and have accurate information about the vacancy rehearsing a few sentences if necessary. First impressions always count so dress appropriately and speak clearly. Some employers may take your contact details and telephone you later so be prepared for the phone call remembering which positions you have applied for and with which companies. You have to show them that you are reliable and organised.

If you have to telephone an employer to apply for the vacancy again be organised before you make the phone call having all the information to hand that they may ask for i.e. your phone number, email address, details from your CV. etc. Speak clearly and plainly, many telephone applications use the first contact phone call to assess your communication skills and language skills. Have a pen and paper handy to make notes and take further details down and your diary with you to check your availability if you are invited for an interview. Again some employers will take your contact details and phone you back so be prepared for the phone call answering your phone in a confident manner.

Prepare answers to questions you may be asked – what previous experience have you had? Why would you like the job? Remember to ask relevant questions about the vacancy - how many hours would I be expected to work? Which days of the week would I have to work? Would I have to wear a uniform? Would a uniform be provided? If after checking on this sort of information you do not think the position would be suitable for yourself, be honest and inform the employer that you are very sorry but the work is not quite what you are looking for – employers do not appreciate time wasters!

If you have been successful in your application you will be invited for an interview. Again, be prepared! Take all the information you will need along with you including documents such as your passport for personal identification.

Good luck and happy job hunting!
